House Rules for
Kunstnarhuset messen
Housing arrangements in the Kunstnarhuset Messsen are made based upon a formal written contract between the Artists in Residency and Kunstnarhuset Messen.
The House Rules listed in this contract are included not only to help the artist to participate effectively in Kunstnarhuset Messen, but also to inform you of the conditions under which Kunstnarhuset Messen agrees to house artists.
1. ENTRANCE DOORS MUST BE KEPT LOCKED
This is to make sure that all residents and artists can be confident that their personal belongings are safe inside the building.
2. USE OF THE ROOMS AND FACILITIES
Kunstnarhuset Messen will provide you with a bedroom and studio when you arrive.
It is the residents’ responsibility to take reasonable care of their room and studio.
In order to keep heating costs at a minimum, please turn down the heaters in your studio and room to a minimum when not in use or during night.
At the end of the residency before departure:
A. All residents must leave the rooms in the condition they found them.
B. Clean the room and studio before departure. Swab the floors.
C. Bedsheets and towels borrowed from the house must be washed and hung to dry in the attic.
D. Make sure all tools and equipment borrowed during your stay are returned.
E. Return keys to the host.

Each resident is responsible for keeping kitchen facility, dining room and his/her room clean and in order.
The kitchen shall be cleaned up and washed after each use.
It is the artist’ s responsibility to clean up the table and all utensils after use.
Washing of brushes with chemicals should not be performed in the sink. Chemicals are hazardous waste and should be treated as such.
Dispose of paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, metal and residual waste separately.
At the backdoor there is a trashcan for residual waste and one for paper/cardboard.
6. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Make sure you return tools and equipment so that other artists can use it too.
7. VISITORS
Visitors of residents can only stay in Kunstnarhuset Messen for periods up to maximum 5days. If residents are to invite visitors during the residency they must ask permission of the General Manager. Please note visitors will be charged a fee of 200NOK per night. Each resident is responsible for the behavior of his / her guests.
8. ACTIVITY IN THE HOUSE
Our host with wife and children live and work at the 2nd floor of the building.
At Kunstnarhuset Messen we maintain a daily life routine meaning we support a lifestyle where work and other activities take place during the day, and rest at night.
Quiet hours after 22:00 must be observed inside and outside of Kunstnarhuset Messen.
Any exceptions from this rule shall be agreed with both housekeepers and other artists of the house.
9. RESPECT FOR OTHERS IN THE BUILDING
Respect your fellow artists as well as the members of the community surrounding Kunstnarhuset Messen.
Many different people live and work in the house at all times. Please have consideration for each other.
10. TRAVEL INSURANCE
All residents must purchase a valid travel insurance before arriving at Messen.
You are invited to Kunstnarhuset Messen at your own risk and Kunstnarhuset Messen is not responsible for loss or damage to artists’ personal belongings.
Security is a shared responsibility between all residents and host. Residents are encouraged to take all reasonable steps to ensure their personal safety and security. Residents who jeopardize the safety or security of other residents by propping open or disabling exterior doors, sharing or otherwise providing access to the house key to any other person(s), or letting unauthorized individuals into the building (intentionally or through lack of care) will be held responsible.
Residents are required to lock the front door and back door upon leaving or entering Kunstnarhuset Messen. Keeping the entrance doors locked helps keeping everyone secure.
Kunstnarhuset Messen is not responsible for your health. Make sure you have taken all precautions regarding your health before arriving at Messen. If medical assistance should be needed during your stay, please contact our host. He will help contacting medical assistance.
11. KEYS
Residents will be provided with 1 room key and 1 front door key.
The keys to the building and studio are for your personal use only; do not give them to anyone else. Please be careful not to lose the keys. If you should do so you must pay the amount of 200 NOK per key for replacement.
Residents must return all keys to the host before departure at the end of the residency.
12. FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
Make sure you have been given a thorough introduction to our fire alarm system by our host upon arrival at Messen.
Doors to the outside must be kept free of blockage at all times. If a window is used for emergency escape (second floor, etc.), the area in front of the window should be free of clutter and easily accessible. THE USE OF FIRE IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING. 13. USE OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
Always use safety timer on the electrical sockets when using coffee machines. All coffee machines in the house is provided with a safety timer. Make sure all personal electrical equipment has a safe standard, and that all power adapters are correct for your equipment. If you are uncertain if any of your equipment is safe please consult the house manager.
14. MAIL ADDRESS
Do not use the Kunstnarhuset Messen mail address for ordering materials. Do not send goods of value or order materials from outside of Norway to the Kunstnarhuset Messen mail address. The Norwegian Customs will charge 25% extra VAT, plus the amount of 200 NOK for checking your international postal shipments.
Postal shipments can take a long time, and residencies are often finished before shipments arrive. Do not order merchandise online. If you order goods internationally you have to expect additional expences.
You are responsible for all costs such as customs and VAT. Any bills will be sent after you.
Registering for official documents, opening a bank account etc. using Kunstnarhuset Messens identity or address is not allowed.
15. SAFETY WHEN HIKING IN THE MOUNTAINS
The nature in Norway is beautiful but you should never underestimate it. The weather can change very rapidly.
Always prepare yourself good and inform someone in the house when going on a trip to the mountains. Tell him/her where you are going, when you expect to return and always take a working mobile phone with you.
16. Medical
You are at the residency at your own risk and Kunstnarhuset Messen is not responsible for your health. Please inform our host in case you should need medical assistance.
If you get infected by Covid during your stay, then we expect you to do your best to prevent other guests in the house from being infected as well until you test negative again.
17. TERMINATION OF RESIDENCY
If the General Manager finds the resident to have ignored or violated the General Agreement including the House Rules in such a way that the residency can’t be continued, the General Manager has the right to cancel the artists’ residency at Kunstnarhuset Messen.
